I am a graduate of Psychology. During my practicum, I was assigned to a Rehab Center wherein I had handled 4 residents of a Rehab.. As I go along the interview with one of my clients, I ask him to write something about the picture I gave him but he refuse and said he forgot to write, then he shared me a story. He is a business man, he, together with his other siblings, owned a big and well established company here in the Philippines. All his life, he struggled and try hard to built it. He is a well groomed man who has a lot of material possessions. He has a huge house and owned many properties, got a nice car, technological gadgets that every materialistic hopes to have. But he has one and only gadget that he always MUST-HAVE which is LAPTOP. As a business man, he was doing a lot of paper works, reports, documents review, e-mails, etc. He did all of his assignments through his beloved laptop. Writing, writing, writing are all done through his laptop. Signature is the only thing that he can't do through it. Before he decided to enter the rehab, he suppose to write a poem for his wife using his own hands so it would seem much sincerer. Unfortunately, he forgot how to do it because of his laptop...
When he shared that to me, I can see him that he was quite embarrass. I was surprise at first, it never comes into my thoughts that that could possibly happen in person, but he is a living testament of such ordeal. Writing is the first thing that all our good teachers taught us when we were toddlers. The basic and one of the common way of communications. It can be used in applying all what you've learned, to share to others your thoughts, and experiences, to express your feelings and emotions. We will never have alphabets if our ancestors never knew how to write. You'll never know how to identify letters on your cell phones, laptop, computer, tablets, and other gadgets if that letter haven't been discussed and wrote in front of you by your teacher or mother. I am not against technology. I am actually a techy-gadgets-user also. I don't write this blog to encourage anybody to left that techy behind, but instead, I write this because I want everybody to realize the importance of writing that I believe many people forgot to do. Yes, it is proven that technology somehow makes things possible, easier, much nicer, better. But we must not forget the importance and more rewarding feeling of doing things by your own hands.. Well yes, I know of course that you are typing with your own hands but don't you think that if you do it manually you can practice and make that ugly-freaky penmanship perfect? It wasn't bad that once in a while you get use to do things with those creative hands, because those old ways will always stays the best and will stand still and shine whenever blackouts occur where technologies don't work because no supplies of energy to make them.
